“Busybee Design??? What is this place?” I thought, after browsing Craigslist for an internship after design school. Well, I know that after scoping out their website (and guys, we’re talking before Facebook was really Facebook and before Instagram even existed) so once I checked it out, (via yahoo that is) I knew I had to be a part of this boutique staging and design firm!! They were just my taste of style, they were vibrant & eclectic, they were obviously diverse in their range of clients, and their website really screamed FUN! So I applied…and awaited the callback.
Walking into their design studio back in 2008 at the Crane Arts building (when Fishtown was really just starting to boom!), I knew I was in the right place. The energy, the décor, the music, the pink walls meshed with exposed brick and beaming large drum lights from a 20’ ceiling, I was swooning. I knew I had to be a part of this team!!
Fast forward to week 1 of being hired for an internship (I made it!) – I remember the various tasks I was delegated and how exciting it all was. I was given real design responsibility to assist on a well known restaurateurs home and even pick out my own accessories for stagings that week “REALLY??!?!! HOW COOL!” But what I most remember is when I first met Anna Powers, unknowing to me that she was even the founder & mastermind behind Busybee, I just thought she was one of the designers!
I remember meeting her at staging, in emergency as she was shorthanded for the day and had a deadline to finish a staging – well, I was game and met her after work that evening. And we totally connected…within 20 minutes of conversation, I was offered a chance to interview for a full time position!!
A week later, I never would have believe I’d be sitting there talking salary and health insurance. “Holy shit, (pardon my French) I have a career!” And for what I actually went to school for at that, which made my parents proud!! So proud my mom sent flowers to me on my first day as an official interior designer…it was cute!) I was given the chance of a lifetime (that most people in my position I knew were struggling to find, especially in the design industry!) and I knew I was the perfect candidate.
Hit the fast forward button again 8 years, 6 offices, a homestore, plus 4 warehouses later (a well as a life lasting friendship with Anna…even a godson!) and I made it from once a shy 20 year old girl with a dream and passion to the director of staging and interiors at Philly’s most sought after firm!! I worked my ass off to get here, and learned 500 times more than I ever would have in school! The clients I have met, the relationships I’ve built, the feeling of family from my Busybee team – I can’t ever imagine spending 8 years anywhere else, or starting my first career anywhere but with Busybee!
